Broken nail

I broke my right thumb nail in the middle from the top about a quarter of the way down.

Plasters come unstuck and are a bit awkward: can I use super glue on it to stop it snagging and hurting like ***k?

Just sensible answers please!

Have you considered going to a manicurist and having a fake nail stuck on top?

Superglue would work but you need to be aware that some of the glues heat up as they cure.

The girlies use nail varnish for that kind of stuff, if the rip is too big then superglue should be OK.

Super glue it is, then! It'll probably take a few months before the split has grown out of the nail: I just want to prevent it snagging. Being right-handed it gets a bit of rough teatment due to the nature of my job.

Acrylic nails are definately good if you can find one big enough for a male thumb.

I usually use an Elastoplast fabric plaster, as they stick to everything, and then coat with super glue as a hardener.

Back in the days before acrylic false nails, guitar players who broke a nail and who needed one used to use bits of ping pong ball, superglued in place.

I have never tried that, but did successfully superglue a partially broken nail back into place 2 days before going on a guitar weekend, where I was playing a lot of fingerstyle stuff. And the nail held up right over the weekend, to my surprise.

Just don't stick any of your other fingers to it whilst gluing your nail, or you'll be in a right old state!

I lost the top of my right index finger (just below the nail) in an accident on a building site! That effing hurt!

Snagging my broken nail hurts a lot, too!
