Just a thought as I was reading this as I'm going to start commuting by bike soon (waiting on the bike arriving).

Is there anything you can do if you broke a spoke on your way to our from work? ie remove it or tape it to another or ?

I had trouble with broken spokes on the lorry battered Tower Gateway to Southwark bridge route.Don't know what I did but I requested sort of stronger back wheel spokes from Evans when I had a new wheel buit and haven't had any trouble since.(touchwood)

Then again I rarely use that old route now,it's more trouble than it's worth.

(BTW - the Mavic front is still perfectly true despite experiencing a year of Edinburgh's best potholes AND a very hard crash into the back of a car, which bent the bars downwards).

I have to say I am a big fan of Mavics. Neither my Ks or Cosmics have needed anything doing at all in years. I'm not especially light, and the roads here are awful, but they are still true as. Ditto, two pairs now of Crossmax on the MTBs - faultless.

Similarly, neither of my pairs of Ops on Record Hubs have needed much other than a basic tune occasionally, and one of those is my CX bike.
