Just so you know that pressing the emegergency stop button doesn't just stop the engine, it locks it & can require the bus driver to get someone from the depot to sort it out.

Also, you can be prosecuted in the Magistrates court if they find out it's you.

get in your car, drive along at 20 mph and turn the engine off without putting your foot on the clutch

I haven't driven in ages...I'm trying to think as it still seems a stupid thing to happen.

Surely the wheels would still freewheel, but the engine might stall?

And your starter for ten -
Buses usually stop at
a) the vegetable section in Tesco's
 a bus stop
c) a dry dock?

a)

If you had put a McDonalds in Walthamstow it would have been a very plausible answer.

Doesn't it just stop the engine? Seems a bit stupid if it locks the bus up IMO.

It is meant for emergencies, so a ten tonne bus isnt going to move very far when the engine cuts out, and seeing as most are semi automatic there is no clutch to press. When you use the retarder to break, which is just electronics without using the normal brakes, it can be a jolt sometimes, just remember when you childishly press the emergency cut out that if an elderly person falls off the chair and cracks a hip, thats normally the beggining of the end for them. But dont worry, your totally in the right to be able to do this as you lost your temper with a bad driver.
It goes to show how some think its alright to endanger others, because a bad driver deserves it eh? Double standards and hypocrisy?
If you cant sort your loss of temper with adult and non dangerous means because your having a tantrum, you shouldnt be on the road.

But if the engine cuts out won't it just freewheel to a stop? There is no need that I can think of, for the bus to lock up, yet there is an obvious possibility that someone could push it when the bus is in motion.

If you jammed the engine into 5th gear from 1st that would stop it, but just turning off the engine when in gear surely wouldn't.

Wish I had a car I could drive at 5mph to test it as it just seems silly

You might have seen a car stall pulling away sometime, in gear it just judders to a stop, now imagine that but on a bus, it wouldnt judder as if it was automatic it would just slow down very fast to a stop, but the sudden change from power to no power can give the feel of applying the brakes.

Im not having a go at thomas, but anyone who thinks its ok to do this.
Its not meant to be a personal attack on him, but a general one on idiots who think this is ok to do.
Replace the word "you" for "they", apologise thomas, its not directed at you.

I wasn't sure, but I read it twice and decided it was aimed at people who think it'd be cool to do and not a personal attack at me/Col mistakenly thinking I thought it would be cool. I'm just trying to convince myself that the bus will just lock up . I do believe it, but I just don't want to  I didn't take it as a personal attack.

I thinking "pushing the emergency stop button" is a great suggestion, as long as no one carries it out. It is a good flippant remark, but I wouldn't cycle up behind a bus and push it. I say that having had arguments with bus drivers and thumping buses when they started to left hook/pull into me.

If you push the button, the driver is just going to get paid overtime/still get paid...where as all the passengers will just get pissed off and not care about cyclists in general. Where as when I had an argument with a bus driver in Norwich town centre (I wasn't going to, but he pulled along side me) and the kids in the back all gave me thumbs up when the bus passed. They might not thought I was as cool if they had to wait another hour to get home.
