According to the article:

There is also parking on Burton Road, Bedminster Parade, Commercial Road, Portwall Lane and Guinea Street, all within five minutes walk of Mr Rahman's restaurant.

But if you ever watch people parking in supermarket car parks, they often go to quite some trouble to avoid walking an extra twenty paces. Goodness knows how they'll walk for up to five minutes!

Sorry in advance to all motorbike riders here, but I've seen bikers squeeze their machines into the cycle stands at supermarkets even when motorbike parking is provided. Why?. Most cycle stands are a wee bit closer (ie 10 yards) to the doors. It annoys me when visiting supermarkets that I can't use the bike stand 'cos there's a huge motorbike rammed between the stands:cursing:. Sainsbury's in Brislington Bristol is infamous for it - blasted scooter riders!.

Lock your bike to theirs and the railings if possible?

I hate cycling in towns at the best of times now, and if I have to drive I'm not adverse to parking a short way away and walking

Also was never a fan of the evening post lol

I think there is a point here that...in the short term, measures like this will have a negative impact on some local businesses.

However, if we wish to truly change the urban environments in which we live, we need to start somewhere.

In the long term (which is to say, as soon as we drivers realise it is no longer always practical to drive into town to stop outside any shop that we like) things will improve dramatically as more passing trade will be attracted by the better environment.

During the transition, businesses will simply have to diversify, perhaps bike stands, cyclist discounts, Rickshaw deliveries (to get on the bandwagon) or Rickshaw "park and drive" type offering to the nearest car park, more outdoor eating, where riders can watch their bikes...is the way forward.

Go WITH the flow and don't fight against it, this could be the best thing that's ever happened to his curry house.

In all fairness, and assuming it's true, I think the owner has a point. If you are running a business and (again assuming true) the council changes something and business drops off, I'd be upset. While it's true councils aren't in the business of providing parking spaces for the benefit of businesses, it certainly behooves them to do so -ultimately businesses usually bring benefit and money to an area.

It's fine saying people can park elsewhere, or that they are within 5 minutes walk of the place, but if your business is suffering, that's not the point -the point is an action has brought about a negative reaction to your business. I know we are all cyclists on this board and hence we're a bit biased towards providing bicycle facilities, but I hope the creation of these cycling lanes has been thought out well enough to provide an overall better benefit than without them.

I like the idea of providing bicycle racks and trying to cater towards cyclists -but of course that only works if there are enough cyclists, or that the cyclists are prospective customers and are likely to stop.

I'm tempted. There's someone with a big fat yellow Ducati who does it down in Broadmead. Wedged between the stands with about 2 inches to spare.

Businesses must suffer anyway when Bristol clogs up with traffic anyway. Given the location of the business it is already in an area where motorists use to park their cars and walk in as they can't park near their destination. I wouldn't ever assume I could park near where I wanted to go in that area whether during the day or night. You either park and walk, bus it or drive round and round in circles desperately hoping a space appears next time around.
