I am about to assemble my Ikea kitchen tomorrow. Though I hate Ikea, I've never had reason to complain at their stuff falling apart, designed by people slightly left of off the wall, yes but quality, OK: Having all the bits in the warehouse, don't even mention it.

I would say their reputation depends more on style and price.

Their quality is very patchy, some products are great and others really quite poor. In fact some are terrible. Most of their lower-end flat-pack stuff is not brilliant, on a par with the stuff you get in Argos etc and certainly not as good as MFI was.

My son has a large Ikea desk though and I really like it. Even that though is quite expensive for the quality on offer, the wood is soft as cheese!

Like most things in life, you get what you pay for. Ikea do have quality products, it just depends what you expect to receive at a particular price point.

Usually when things fall apart they weren't put together properly ( I'm not having a dig at anyone) or the item has been subject to repeated heavy handedness. Most manufacterers won't release an item for sale if it's likely to fall apart after very little use. That's what I've discovered anyway.
