I bought my proper bike a few months ago which is a mountain bike and I now have the bug and would like a road bike. I will mainly be using it for a 12 mile all round commute during the week and then a longer ride on the weekends. I have no idea what I'm looking for when it comes to road bikes so could anyone please recommend me a bike that will suit my riding? I have a budget of £400

Thanks,
Mike

Where have you looked for bikes? There are plenty of bikes in your price range, but I'd be more inclined to save a bit harder, for example £549 might get you something like this: Cannondale CAAD8 triple sora 2010 , or £494 might get you this: Giant Defy3 triple sora 2010

Both of those bikes are good simple road bikes, and they don't ask a lot from the rider in terms of fitness, they have a wide range of gear ratios that suit cruising along the flat road to climbing up steep hills.

I have only looked at a few websites and haven't found anything in particular, I really don't know what's good or not. I think I am going to have to stretch my budget, I really like the Cannondale, the thing that worries me is that they now only have one size, this morning they had three different sizes so they are going quick!

if its for work can you get your employer on the bike to work scheme, it spreads out the payments and reduces the total amount (tax) you need to pay.

I'm thinking a road bike with fittings for mudguards and a rack means you can be clean and carry stuff but get there quickly and have fun on the weekends? My tricross does all that but adds an element of off road prowess you don't really need and comes in well over budget then you buy the stuff like rack guards lights ect that you need to ride year round carrying things
