Have you ever had to cancel all of them at the same time? Such a pain.

Does anyone know if I go into Natwest with my cheque book (assuming I still have one!) and passport whether they will give me money? I currently have £4.49 and a few US dollars in cash. I really must make a point of keeping more money in the house for situations like this. Good thing the house is well stocked with food. Oh well lesson learned...

if you speak to the bank they will cash a cheque (assuming you have the funds!!) but you have to take your passport for ID.They did that for me when my card was cloned

If you have phoned and cancelled your cards (done it and it is a sever punishment for getting pi**ed and losing your wallet) you can go into a bank with valid ID and draw cash without an issue.

How much does it cost to Oldham?
Oh yeah. Last year got back from the supermarche' can couldn't find me wallet. Looked high and low. cancelled everything- works amex, own cards, everything- right arse. cleaning the car out two days later and it was under the driver's seat:blush::thumbsup::biggrin:

About eight years ago me and the missus went out on the pop the night before I was due to fly to japan (at 9am the next morning). Woke up at 6am with a head like easter island, and no wallet. Bugger. Had to phone visa and Amex to cancel and flew to Osaka with a heuuuge hangover, my passport and four hundred quid in traveller's cheques. Met a new Amex over there- i've still got a Japanese Amex at home!

if you cant find a cheque book, but you do have photo ID they will do it over the counter with a bank withdrawal slip.

Ok, that sounds promising. I'll head to the bank at lunchtime. Thanks everyone.

I only ever carry two cards with me and keep the others safely at home so I thought I'd be safe. However an internet company I use was hacked (the data loss is awful - something like 100,000 websites offline) but it seems their billing system may have been compromised. Unfortunately I've used a variety of cards for paying them, not just the one.

It is a long, complicated and technical story...

I'm a customer of web host called VAserv (Maidenhead) who got hacked on Sunday night. The hackers appeared to get in through a web based admin system and gained root access to hundreds of servers where they ran a script to delete files. 100,000 websites went down and hackers claimed to have accessed the billing system. (The hackers may have lied, but obviously I had to assume they had my card details.) Worst of all the developer of the admin system committed suicide. So compared to all that my credit card situation is pretty trivial.

Not sure about the implications for the individual companies who hosted at VAserv. Some may go out of business due to their inadequate backups. I guess anyone who ran a web based shop from a VAserv server must be checking their own security. I imagine most would use third party billing so hopefully the general public won't be involved.

There is a massive data centre there called BlueSquare. You may be hosted in the same building, or even next door, but it doesn't necessarily mean you are involved. VAserv's subdivisions were A2B2, fsckvps and cheapvps. You'd almost certainly have received an email if you were involved. But I suppose no harm in checking.
