It's ok saying ride more than a door's width but it the knob in the car behind you is too dumb to see why you're avoiding the door zone then he/she will give you grief.
Agreed avoid the door zone on a bike. But in a car, there are some situations where you can't avoid it. e.g. narrow two way road with parked cars either side. If someone opens a door there, it's their problem. That would slow me down - keep opening doors to look inside.Also make a habit of looking inside the car to see if it is occupied.
