A carboy is a big bottle in a wire cage used for storing bleach and the like, the accumulator is/was a huge battery thatI would take to the garage where they would charge and they also sold Tizer.

I thought 'battery' when I saw the word accumulator.

Unlike the high rollers on here who thought it a reference to gambling.

Carboy is a new one on me.

MInd you I had never heard of catfishing beyond the angling context, before I saw the BBC web site this morning.
Yeah but that film only came out in 2010. Carboys have been around for a bit longer.

Work in a lab, still hear it from time to time. Can't say I've ever heard it anywhere else though.
It's not a word I ever hear in the lab. We would just call it a bottle. A lot of the old terminology seems to be on the way out though.

Bottle, container or 'large poly' is more common in general. Lab suppliers still use carboy (e.g. Fisher)

The word has largely died out at my workplace since we got DI water on tap everywhere and we don't need big containers on the benches or to feed humidity cabinets.

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
I have fond memories of accompanying my father in law to his nearby wine co-operative in Umbria to refill his carboy (damigiana) with the local red, to which he contributed the crop from his few vines.

Last time I handled a carboy was when I collected one full of distilled water from Boots' the chemist. The distilled water was used at locations where the local tapwater was considered unsuitable for topping up secondary cells.
I don't believe the accumulator was necessarily "huge". Some, about the size of a conventional brick, were used to provide the LT or 1.5 volt valve heater supply to domestic radios in homes which did not have a mains electricity supply. The HT supply of 90 volts or 67.5 volts usually came from a dry cell which was dumped when it became exhausted..
