Care to recommend a laptop?

I need to replace my XP desktop (kind of liked being able to get inside the thing but I suppose I should make the move to a laptop) and so I'm going to get a laptop.

Also I understand that the clock is ticking (a year left?) on XP support.

PC not MAC I stress.

Anyone care to suggest one and a supplier - where I can pick it up in London?

I stress that while the thing needs to be relatively future-proof against coming, er, developments/bloatware, I stress that the thing will only be using for "typing" type applications, web stuff, email etc.

I won't be producing any earth shattering music or video extravaganzas on it.

And how much memory should I go for?

Thanks in anticipation of help from you kind souls.

My wife and I both replaced older laptops with HP Compaq Presario CQ57 laptops last year. They're still around from the likes of PC World/Currys and also Staples. One's now done over 12 months the other just under 12 months and they've been faultless. Windows 7 on them. Have already recommended them to other people who've been very pleased with them as well. They've been down to about £200 incl VAT.

Won't do if you want to buy the very latest, highest performance, machine though.

Mine is spending more and more time as a TV add-on so thinking of getting another for that job!

They came with 4GB of memory, one has a 500GB HDD the other 320GB. More than enough so far.

I'm hoping these will last long enough for Tablet PCs to have arrived at a sensible price before they need replacing.

With such undemanding requirements you could probably get something that meets your requirements for
under £300 as long as you don't insist on buying it from a shop as most laptop purchasing is now online.
Your main issue will be learning to use Windows 8.

I think Windows 8.1 is meant to arrive in the summer, which is rumoured to be bringing back the start menu and boot to desktop options that seem to be fixing the most common complaints about Windows 8. It may or may not be worth hanging on for that or getting a Windows 8 machine now, depending on whether that's an update or an upgrade.

I cant really think of anything important in terms of specification, given your low requirements.
