Carrying bananas

As we all know, bananas make an ideal touring snack, but how the hell to you carry a few without them turning into mush?

I don't tend to have enough spare space in a pannier or bar bag to put them without them getting squashed and when I've tried hooking them somewhere on the top they end up ruined by the bumbing and bouncing about.

I've thought about rigging up some sort of hanging net which would let them swing free but that does seem a bit ott.

Anyone got a solution? (apart from banana guards, 3 or 4 would half fill a pannier).

Cut the bananas up into chunks before you set off and store them in a small tupperware container. Saves having to work out what to do with the skins too. If it's just one banana though I stuff it in a back pocket of my cycling shirt.

I have a cargo net thingie - road food - bananas, croissants, swiss rolls etc just get tucked into it in a paper bag - not that they stay there for very long anyway :hungry:

I was going to suggest using shockcord (elastic cord) to attach the banana to part of the bike. Maybe you could do the same with the bare banana. The velcro looks neat though - velcro cable ties (eg IKEA)?

I was just thinking this morning how handy something like that would be for things like bread rolls.
