Wrap the cat firmly in a towel so it looks like a sausage roll with its bum hanging out so you do not get slashed to death. If it is fresh (i.e. wet and soft) poo wipe off with baby wipe or wet kitchen roll, it is is hard dried poo, clip it out with scissors.

If all else fails phone a dog groomer they often do cats and are used to dealing with a animal with a pooey bum

Woah! Hold on there. There are not many of us dog groomers that will risk their livelihoods grooming cats. Out of my forum bunch (about 600 of us) there is one who will take on a cat. Klingons on the starboard bow are one thing with dogs but with cats its all a bit trickier. Unless its a rag doll cat and then its a doddle.

Wrap the cat in a towel. Have one person hanging on to it, pref. wearing gauntlets. Another to keep it occupied with a tin of tuna and a third person to either clip off (beard trimmers are good for this) or use sharp, but rounded end scissors. Be quick. very quick.

Failing that, I was going to suggest the freezer method too

I'm glad we have 3 (so they can clean each other) and they're short haired. No poo here . Although we do call one 'Sphincter Boy'.
