I have a velo computer and when I ride the bike it's hit and miss if it picks up my speed, but if I press the function button and lift the front wheel up and spin then wheel it gives me a reading.
Any ideas what's up with it.
Also I've changed the battery on the piece on the fork, and it's still the same.
Thanks.

Try closing the gap between the spoke sensor and the frame sensor. Failing that, give both sensors a wipe to clean off any grit or mud. Failing that, I dont know ^_^

Can you get the magnet any closer to the sensor, does the magnet pass close to the line/arrow on the pick-up, it could be that when you lift the wheel you are on the limit of the sensor but still works, but as you are riding down the silky smooth roads that we have in the UK the flex on the spokes & forks may get too much.

Just a thought, maybe the weight of you on the bike could be making the fork or something flex and increasing the gap between the magnet and reciever?....not implying you are heavy or anything. But it sounds like something is changing when you start riding.

I had trouble with my cateye wireless giving bad readings and I had to get the magnet even closer than I had it to start with by adjusting both the reciever and the magnet and finally got it right. The Department of Motor Vehicles here puts these nearly half inch deep rumble strips just outside the solid white outside lines. I have to hit them sometimes and I think once in a while it knocks the magnet or sensor out of adjustment.

Ok, the magnet is about 1-2mm away from the device its clean and a new battery.
Not sure what more i can do, it worked for a minute or two on the way home and stopped.

As I said earlier is there a line or arrow on the pick-up which is optimum for the magnet to be, every one I have seen in the past has, so I would move it 5mm lower down the spoke & then try again, if that fails move it 10mm up. Not sure which model you have but here is one model instructions http://www.cateye.com/files/manual_dl/9/455/VL200_v4_E.pdf

I just noticed in your original post you said you changed your battery in the fork unit, I assume this means you have a wireless unit. I just want to make sure you know there is a battery in the main display unit on the bars also, it uses more power than the fork unit.
