Celebration Stations

Hi Guys,

Long time no chat.

I've not been sitting on my laurels though. I was disappointed with Bike Week, and I discuss this here. Instead of sitting on my rear end and just moaning about it I have an idea for how we could liven Bike Week up next year, and preach to others, and not just the converted. My idea is Celebration Stations (based on something that already happens in Canada) which are placed at the side of busy commuter routes (i.e. traffic jams!). It's somewhere that cyclists could stop off, have a bun, get some goodies, enter a competition, have a natter etc, before they continue on their way passing the huge queues of traffic.

There is more information here.

It's just an idea, but one I am keen to pursue. I'd need help of course, and obviously other opinions are very welcome.

Let me know what you think!

Strangely, I follow Arcteryx on Twitter. They're very much involved in this in Canada, it's more frequently than once a year too. Seems like a great idea, and obviously it's a fair chance you can get a few of the UK outdoor/bike/etc. companies in on it (of course it's advertising for them).

The local CTC had a sort of drop by, have a cupper and a cake, morning a while back, in the town centre. Also had a mechanic to look over peoples bikes and give them some advice.
I missed it as it didn't start until 8am and I'm at work by then.

My employer's bike to work day thing was very good by all accounts - I had to be in early for a meeting, so passed when it was being set up, all the goodies were gone by mid afternoon on my return.

SportMonkey,

Yes I'll be contacting VACC (Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition) to get some advice directly from them. I think they organise them.

BSRU, Fossyant, yes it would be something along those lines, hopefully with a little more sponsorship (better goodies etc) and it will be on the commuter route itself, so very visible. At least that is the plan.

Sounds like a great idea. Greggs do a decent bacon roll and cup of coffee in the morning and there's thousands of them. The one local to me has always been very generous to our school fairs. Might be worth a try.

Good luck with it anyway.

Last year, Bristol had a few of these, organised by the council. There was one in the centre, and one near the MoD (Abbey Wood) with bacon rolls, fruit, pastries... Loads of cyclists were there when I attended the MoD one.
Sadly, the above was funded out of the "Cycling City" pot of money. As the project ended in April, there was no funding this year, so no stalls :-( The council did say though that they were very keen to keep running them and were looking for a sponsor from some of the larger businesses in the area...
