Emergency services are at the scene

Several people were injured when a cement mixer lorry fell from a bridge and landed on a train at Oxshott, Surrey. The vehicle landed on coaches of the 1505 South West Trains passenger service from Guildford to London Waterloo just after 1500 GMT.

Emergency services are at the scene. A Network Rail spokesman said: "So far there are no reports of fatalities though it is believed there are several people injured."

A spokeswoman for South East Coast Ambulance Service said around six ambulances and response vehicles were at the scene.

Sounds like a very lucky escape, really although the lorry driver seems to have come off worst by all accounts.

I was reading this bit on the beeb website:

"Eyewitness Nikki Karim works in a taxi office near to the crash site. She said: "There's a lot of police at the station, there's a few minor casualties that are sat at the platform.""

And I liked this quote:

"She added: "You don't expect this sort of thing to happen.""

Well, no, you don't really, do you? Can't her for logic, although 10 out of 10 for pointless statements!

Having read the headline before I saw a picture, I thought the damage looked remarkably 'minor' - I was expecting whole flattened carriages and a derailment. Presumably the train wasn't going all that fast. Perhaps 'lucky' it fell on the train, and not in front of it, which might have derailed the first coach.

Can you imagine the announcement of the delay at the next station it was scheduled to stop at?

"We apologise to all passengers for the late arrival of this service. The wrong type of cement mixer fell on the train."

It will be interesting to see ... saw this on the Telegraph web-site:
George Palmer was riding passenger in a van immediately behind the cement lorry and watched in horror as it crashed through a brick wall and plunged 40ft down onto the roof of the train.
Mr Palmer, 16, a window fitter who was on his way home to Fetcham, Surrey, said: "The lorry clipped the edge of the bridge on the left and then swerved out into the path of oncoming traffic.
"The driver obviously tried to correct it but the weight in the back of the truck caused it to swing violently back to the left side of the road and the rear end smashed through the brick wall of the bridge.
"It was like something from a film, like the end scene of the Italian Job, as it was hanging backwards over the edge but then it suddenly plunged down with an enormous thud.
"There was a deafening sound of tearing metal and as I ran to look over the edge I could see the lorry lying on its side on the tracks - it was a complete mess of mangled metal.
"The train had carried on going and was coming to a halt a bit further up the track but one side was ripped open like a tin can where the lorry had landed on the side of the carriage and torn through it.

So if he did clip the left hand side, it looks as if that side has a pavement.

From what I have seen I don't think the bridge had a pavement and im pretty sure I would not like to drive a lorry over it even if I had all my faculties present.I know the bridge is high up and the report that came through at first was train had hit a road vehicle which is not actually true. It's the other way round although if I had heard that I would have been even more baffled.Whether they will reinforce the bridges probably comes down to money and the fact that incidents like these are very rare.(touchwood)
