A 8sp chain works on 9/10 sp chain rings as well

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
another possibility is that one of the chainrings in on back to front - unlikely but possible
I have had this on a 10 speed Campag chainset - had to flip the inner ring over to prevent chain skating on the teeth of the inner ring. The teeth may not be machined exactly centrally within the thickness of the chainring material, thus the spacing may change if the ring is flipped over.

Thanks guys for all the helpful feedback!
Above chainset order from Spa.
Looks like a job for this coming weekend.......and then some more training for my lad on changing gears.

Mind you he really impressed me last weekend. Towards the end of a 40+ mile run, we come to a long 25%+ hill that he's never got a quarter of the way up before.I jokingly bet him a fiver he couldn't make it all the way up......and blow me he did! Grinding his way on the large chain ring, up on the pedals the whole way, doing 2-3 mph, red faced and covered in sweat.
His shear guts and determination made me very proud.
Mind you cost me a fiver and the writing is definately on the wall for the day when I won't be able to keep up with him.
