Slowly getting an SS build together on an old Falcon racer. Horizontal dropouts on rear & 113 BB square taper. Dished rear wheel with shimano 18T freewheel.

Tested out chainline with an old 36T mountain bike crankset (pressed type) and its a perfect line.

What i need help on is knowing what budget 42-46T cranksets out there are likely to be a good line. Are there measurements I should be checking out first?
From what i can tell from pictures online, single cranksets are flat on the inside which i think is needed for the best chainline.

Insight gratefully received
Cheers

Finn, I'd have a read of Sheldon Browns website here:-

http://sheldonbrown.com/singlespeed.html

the man himself may be dead but they're keeping the pages alive and quite up to date, some great articles there as well. Also worth a look at VeloSolo, they're really helpful on phone/e-mail. for some reasonably priced stuff I'd also have a look at Spa Cycles, if you ring them they'll talk you through stuff as well.

Stronglight cranksets are going for 50 quid on planet x atm. It's about 10 to 15 for the matching bottom bracket too.

If you want something a bit better look at miche primato.

Other options are sugino messenger cranks (popular with urbanites) or the sugino entry level track cranksets.

I am building a single speed at the moment and I bought a rear single speed wheel that was built to give me a 42.0 mm chainline (this was out of my control). I therefore had to get a BB and chainset that was also going to give me the same 42.0mm chainline.

after aot of messing about I rang Spa cycles in Harrogate and they were able to workout the BB and chainset mix to give me this 42.00mm and it seems to be pretty spot on.

Iended buying from them a stronglight JP400 BB (68mm shell) with a 110mm spindle length for £10 and a stronlight 42T front chainset at only £20. It appears to do the job for me.

The Stronglights are 48t, but 48/18 is ~70", not a bad gear at all.

48/18 is what I run on my Langster.

Only ever had to get off once and push and that was near the top of a 20% in Yorkshire, the 20% down before didn't quite carry me thru ;-)
