My new bike is listed as a 11-32 cassette (10 speed ) with sram apex and a compact chain set.

I do not need a 32, maybe a 11-28 .

If i change the cassette i do not need to change the chain length?

Correct.

I changed my cassette from a 11-34 (Mega-range) to an 11-32 and spandex advised me that it was unnecessary to shorten the chain and a couple of chains later it was still the same length and there was no issues. I've subsequently dropped it to a 11-30 and did shorten the new chain then :-)

11-32?

the madness ...

Sram apex , i think they stuck it because they can .

in my normal cycling i do not use below 34x 23 but it is always nice to have a few extra in hand .

It is either that or maybe it would be cheaper to change the 34 chainring for a 36 ...

Obviously there is no need in that nothing whatsoever has changed for all existing gear settings.Though removing 4 links would save a few grams in weight.
