Changing front gear cable

My front gear cable is frayed and will need replacing on my giant defy. The shifters are 105 and the cable housing goes underneath the bar tape

Will I be able to feed the cable round rather than having to re-wrap the tape (it's not long been done)

Is cable just cable or is there a particular brand I should buy or avoid ?

Cable is a cable. Make sure you get a gear cable and not a brake cable as they have different ends. Also do not cut the cable until after you have threaded it.

I've found the cheap Clarkes cables work perfectly fine on Shimano stuff (not so much on SRAM)

It's quite easy to do but make sure that you don't kink the cable as you take up the slack at the point where the new inner goes into the end of the old outer. It also helps enormously if the new inner has a cleanly cut end on it.

Edit: It also helps if you lightly lube the inner before trying to thread it.
