What do the manufacturers say? I've a feeling they say replace every 3 years. I replace mine when they start to get tatty (usually coinciding with the 3 year recommendation). Obviously, any serious knock means getting the credit card out.

I've also heard that polystyrene, rubber and some plastics tend to degrade over time and become brittle due to leaching of chemicals into the atmosphere.

A & E is not the place to discover that the inside of your helmet has turned to dust!

I can see the sense of changing it every 2-4 years depending on use/ climate exposure etc.
