Barry Rogerson, the man who punched a Police Horse at a football match has pleaded guilty to violent disorder and has been warned by the judge to expect a custodial sentence.
This seems harsh to me, for the following reasons:
1. He claims that he was startled by the horse and his action was a reflexive, defensive one.
2. The only reason he had a scarf covering his face was that the recent loss of a tooth was causing discomfort when he breathed in cold air.
3. He is an animal lover and even has fish to prove it.
4. He is very poorly and is on sickness benefit due to a lung complaint that stops him working.
Surely only an extremely hard judge would punish this man any more than his obvious remorse is already making him suffer. How many of us haven't accidentally swung at a police horse while covering our faces with a scarf to prevent toothache?
I for one find his explanation plausible and I think he should be set free and thanked by the court.
