Call me a grumpy old man but it has become impossible to watch a tv program on commercial channels without coming across advertising for all sorts of charities. It seems that Britain has become a nation impossible to survive without the help of its subjects having to dig deep in its pockets. What do we pay our taxes for I ask you? The government always find money for all sorts of things except what really matters to its people, like research for various deadly diseases and other worthwhile causes. My view is that as long as we keep supporting charities, the government will be happy to carry on as it is. Personally, I don't give to charities for that very reason. The only one I actively support is Air Ambulances by direct debit but won't pay for anything else. I have paid taxes all my life so use them.

Do we cross Air Ambulances off the list of things the government should pay for from taxes then?

Turn the TV off/over if you don't like it?

I think you'll find there is government investment in medical research through funding of the NHS and universities. Pharma, other private industries, philanthropists and charities etc contribute also. The research not done through Pharma is also undertaken by public sector employees, scientists, doctors, academics

I dont know what other specific worthwhile causes you mean so can't comment there

Yes, just looked, my local hospice receives funding from the local NHS trust. It also raises funds through its conference centre as well as fundraising, donations and legacies

If only the 5p per bag charge were to be extended to those that get put through our letter box almost daily...
