I'm a daily commuter, 12 mile round trip on my road bike.

I'm looking for something sturdy to ride on those really wet or icy days. As it's for occasional use I don't want to break the bank. There are quite a few mountain bikes I've seen around £300 eg GT, Felt, some even have disc brakes. I'd go second hand but have been finding my size requirements (6'6'') limiting.

I would love some advice on entry level MTBs! More specifically would this be rideable? I bought a Halfords bike a few years back which was so heavy and the suspension was so springy I couldn't do anything with it.

Cheap road bike as a winter hack? Giant Defy series is on clearance in most places.

Apologies, was vague, have edited post. I think I'm after a mountain bike. Something with big tyres on it.
