The charmingly named Cock Brow?

AppleStreet003.jpg

I think it is Cowlishaw Road which is sort of the other side of the Low from Joel Lane. Bloody awful road surface so I only ever ride up it, down is too sketchy for me

Never been up or down it on a bike but used to walk the dog down there to Compstall lakes and back up School Lane.

Fossy, which ones are they? Apple Street/Cock Brow, Joel Lane? I grew up on the side of the Low.

Cowlishaw and Apple Street (cock Brow) - the one above in the photo. It's very difficult on a road bike - look at the concrete pattern. Chatted to a guy last saturday, saw him go down apple Street, but I was going for Joel Lane. Met him near the top and he'd not managed to get up without walking.

Gorsey is another good one, Chapel Brow is horrid.

I'm back from an intrepid chevron hunt.

I had hoped the dry weather would mean dry roads but Gorsey Brow was damp so the back wheel was slipping on the steepest bit (25%?) which was disconcerting but I got up it.

Cock Brow was going OK. The concrete rutted surface gives good grip actually. Until I rode over a spattered pile of horse s***. Slip, slip, slip. Complete standstill so had to put foot down before I fell over. No way to restart there (25% again) so pushed it a few metres and found a bit of 15% and got it going again. After that (the bit in the photo) it was OK

Skipped Chapel Brow as it was directly into a 15mph headwind and I'd had enough. Need to Man Up

From a fitness perspective with a long steep hill there is nowhere to hide. If you stop putting the effort in you stop and fall of the bike. I think most people will view getting to the top of a long steep hill as a challenge and when they do feel it is an achievement. Or they are simply masochists.

My flat ride today had 1500ft of ascent. No wonder my averages are rubbish.
