Chilblains!

Had a problem with my big toe, started ast winter and ended up very painful.
I thought it was eczema or even ringworm but it just seemed to go away.
My big toe end swelling and what looked like some sorta very small blood blister or insect bite at the front. Was agonising if I knocked it.
Didn't mention it to the doctor so just avoided it getting really cold during the winter commute.

Just found out its a blooming Chilblain!
How can something seem so relatively innocuous sounding be so painful?!

I also thinking know what caused it... Too warm a shower too soon after a winter ride, apparently causes the constricted smaller blood vessels to open too quickly and rupture. This also often causes a blister type thing, hence my big toe!

So, remember to keep the tootsies warm and if they do get cold and white, let them pink-up properly before too oht a shower or bath.

Suffered from them for years, got them real bad at the moment across all my toes. Its not just sudden changes in tempurature that can cause them,i get them from just getting cold feet during the day and it can last most of the winter. There is no real cure but you can get what looks like a giant chap stick that is parafin and wax called Snow Fire. It soothes the stinging pain and helps them clear up much quicker.

I used to suffer terribly with chillblains as a kid (too many hours spent playing in the snow in shoes with holes in!).

The itching got so bad that I used to put my toes under the leg of the table and press down on the table with all my might.

A few weeks ago I got really itchy toes and redness, took me a while to figure out it was the start of chilblains. It would seem that my Rocky-style running through ice cold water a couple of times a week and then heading for a hot shower when I got home wasn't as awesome an idea as I first thought ;)

I've got one on the little toe on my right foot, the last time I had them was over thirty years ago, I'd forgotten how sore they could be, one I had years ago would reliably tell me when it was about to rain.

Relatively innocuous, as you say - but not to be ignored in <cough> the older adult. Like the rest of me, my circulation is slowing down and I occasionally get chillblains in my heels, despite e.g. having done an hour at the gym. It's a sign that I need to get out of the house on foot.
IIRC there is evidence that walking is an important part of general health and fitness, even for people like me who do lots of other exercise. So I've invested in an Omron Step Counter - had it a week and it still reckons I'm dead.
