I've got intermittent chirping (only while pedalling) at probably the rear derailleur and I may have to replace the pulleys. However, I'm doubting my diagnosis since I replaced the original eight year old pulleys only three years ago (Shimano RD-M593).

Does the chirping happen when back peddling with the wheel stationary or, with the wheel rotating and the pedals stationary?
You have lubed the pivots, have you cleaned and lubed the chain and jockey wheels?

That seems too soon for pulleys to wear out. A chirp only when pedaling is often the bottom bracket. Try removing the chain and spinning the cranks by hand to see if the noise is still there. Also, make sure your derailleur cage isn't bent and lightly rubbing a cog.

I've de-greased, WD40'd, finished off with washing-up liquid and followed up with lubrication. I'll know when I get out on a test cycle if was down to gunge.

In the meantime, some people wondered if the derailleur cage could be bent - to my untrained eye it looks straight.

Anyway, if I get chirping, it'll be easier to replace the pulleys - they're not expensive.

It's not the cage that get's bent, but the hanger. Neverthless, chirping has nothing to do with cage or hanger. It is very easy to remove and clean the pulleys and lube them and the chain. If you did not remove the pulleys and popped out the bush, you could not have oiled it and your exercise was just one of BSing yourself.
