Anyone else notice the polution cycling into work in London this morning? I struggled to catch my breath and I must have coughed all the way from Isleworth to Piccadilly. Yuk!

About to head off myself to work and it looks a bit gloomy out there here in the East. A pollution boffin on the radio has just said its fine to cycle in these conditions (unless you have asthma) and was about to peddle away from the studio himself. Good enough for me!

It does seem a bit unfair that we're the ones causing zero pollution and yet the most likely to suffer from it (along with joggers etc).

Work advice this morning.

'This morning the met. office has issued a warning about high levels of air pollution in the South East - the pollution is composed of dust blown in from the Sahara, mixed with industrial pollutants from across Europe.

Met. office advice is to avoid physical exertion, particularly outdoors over the next few days. As a result, all sports facilities and all of the school fields will be out of bounds to staff and pupils today and for the remainder of this week.

Those who cycle or run to and from work/school are advised to make alternative travel plans until the pollution has passed. '

I think I'll pass on that. I'd rather put up with a bit of dust than someone's BO pollution on the tube.

For me it feels it's been like this since Sunday! The air's been all dusty and horrible for days now, I honestly can't notice that it's significantly worse today.

I cycled in and back as it's not far, but I have boycotted my run. The last few days running have been a fairly unpleasant experience. Can't wait for some rain tomorrow and for this to go away! I've mostly grown out of my asthma but I've had to break the old inhaler out several times this week already.

Situation normal for the time of year. Nice ride today, warm too; could've done without the leg warmers but I keep them on because it looks more pro.

This is where it gets utterly dysfunctional: a solution to traffic pollution, i.e. cycling, becomes more dangerous, forcing a greater reliance on the car and adding to the problem. This was also evident with Traffic Flow London's obsession with getting cars and trucks along choked roads faster to the expense of cycling security. Similar problem, same reaction of deterring the solution.

Meanwhile, I don't suffer from asthma and my legs give way before my lungs but my hours driving in London are giving me a deteriorating throat irritation. I'm coughing my way along the South Circular.
