Well that's something I'll never organise again.

Maybe it was the person who embarrassingly loudly had a go at me about paying the full amount upfront in front of the venue's manager rather than talk to me about it six weeks ago when I started organising it, maybe it was the people who didn't pay until the last minute even though I specifically asked for the money straight after a pay day (one of whom was apparently taking a stand against paying all of it so early but who never spoke to me about it), maybe it was how rude people were to the serving staff even though the problems mainly arose from people not knowing what they ordered and not bothering to check before we got there even though I told everyone I had a list, maybe it was the fact that even though I organised the whole thing no one thought to save me a seat and because someone turned up unexpectedly expecting to be fed a chair had to be dragged over and I had no cutlery, maybe it was because someone ended up with the wrong meal because even though I handed out the menu choices list three times someone still took his main, maybe it was because people complained to me about their perfectly good food instead of just eating it or talking to the staff, maybe it was the people who rather than just not put money in the tip envelope decided to put bottle caps, coppers and other pieces of rubbish in there.

Whatever the reason I had a sh*t time.

Merry f****** Christmas.

How much does it cost to Oldham?
And breathe.

I organised/booked last year's christmas do. Never again-more trouble than it's worth.

And that's without the person who says "I don't want to go, can I just have the afternoon off instead?"

Or the one who wants to stay at work and have the cost of the office Do added to his wages (yes, really. I was gobsmacked).

Everything you did sounds right, including paying up front. So as far as the ungrateful rude people go, they just don't deserve another thought of yours. They've all swanned back to their desks, leaning back rubbing their stuffed stomachs so I hope the negative feelings you're having don't last long as they simply don't deserve that much attention from you.

That was such a nice gesture from you to not only organise everything but to keep it as organised as possible. I'm sure there were some there who really appreciated the amount of effort you obviously put into it. I know I would.

I feel better now but I was so upset yesterday. Most people were lovely but the minority were awful. Sigh. Friends have made me promise not to organise it again ever.

I used to organise department lunches, christmas events, summer jollies etc where I work, but after having to explain why I booked certain places, or why I'd left it longer than normal or being told to sort something cheaper/more expensive/better decor next time and the effort of getting money out of people or having them cancel after they'd confirmed they'd definitely go and me paying the deposit for them, I just gave up. Now I usually laugh if anyone asks when the next event is or I tell them it's whenever they want to organise it for (insert look of horror here)!

A couple of weeks ago someone emailed me with a link to a place they thought looked good for a department christmas event. Their email was simply asking if I thought the department would enjoy this place and then the link. I replied saying I'm sure it would be fine as it catered for all sorts of preferences and left it at that. A few days ago the same person "chased me up" on where I was with the arrangements as we're running out of time! This still makes me laugh that they thought they could manipulate me like that.

So, no department Christmas event this year with my name being used as the reason why!

See I allowed a democratic process of voting (there were around 40 of us) so I at least couldn't be blamed for the venue.

I once organised a cycling club outing to Bradford, where I introduced the members to the delights of the New Beehive Inn near Mannigham Lane: http://www.newbeehiveinn.co.uk/index2.php great ales and gas candelabra, followed by a finger curry in the city centre. The miserable ingrates just moaned that the restaurats were unlicenced and the New Beehive had a limited selection of lagers. Never again.

I have organised a work's/department Christmas meal a couple of times. Generally I wait until everyone is so desperate for someone to do it, that they are grateful of anything that happens. Last time I put together a nominal team of three people to head up the organising, so we could share thoughts, blame and accolade.

But just hate it when people criticise, and haven't the guts to try to do better themselves next time.
