Our electric vehicle was off the road today, so we did the whole round on the trikes. So I rode this

up:

this

It perhaps doesn't look so bad, but we call it Old People's Hill because there's some sheltered accommodation at the top. The 3 little dark shapes you can see on the wall are fold down seats for them to rest on the way up. It's pretty steep, and keeps going up round the bend.

Even better, my boss was on foot with me, and said he'd wanted to give me a push to help, but couldn't keep up!

I was unladen at the time, and 45 minutes and a couple of streets later, once I had 100kgs of stuff on board, a tiny voice in my head said "I wonder if you could do it now...." I resisted - my knees would have exploded!

Why can't our recycling folk ride bikes/carts........... all in dirty great big dust wagons....(and we believe most of it get's tipped as the council don't have the correct handling facilities yet)......

Well done.......

York has its big wagons too - we tend to service the narrower streets and areas the trucks have trouble with - we're about to have big change, and cover the whole of the city centre instead of the more spread out suburban areas we do now - the council will take them over. Our guys set up the service some years back, before recycling was quite so widespread, just for the local streets.

The trikes are good, but have their limitations - partly the weight we can carry, and partly the sheer volume - plastic bottles might not weigh much, but they fill builders bags up very quickly... For big city efficiency, a truck, with a crusher, is probably the way to go.

And of course, once we've taken the stuff back to our compound and filled the huge skips, the recycling merchants still have to come and pick it up. In big trucks...

I was riding in today, and a bin lorry started to pull out from the kerbside ahead of me, then stopped when he spotted me. I waved him out - there was a red light coming up anyway and I might as well be behind him, than have him have to overtake me later. As I waited behind, I thought "some folk wouldn't fancy sitting behind a bin lorry on their bike, what with the smell and that, but it really doesn't matter to me - I'm about to go and handle the same stuff!"

Congratulations (I've just looked at the rest of the hill).

Going OT did you see the guys in one of those trikes that cycled in front of Eddie Izzard all the way through his marathon runs. Looked like a really nice job

Cheers! It's a bit of a shock to the system alright, that hill - mainly because most of York is so flat.

Someone rode a Maximus over several marathon distances? Respect! We generally do 3-4 miles a day on the rounds, and that's enough (enough for me to log them on mycyclinglog!). Nice vehicles though, superb at the job.
