I have a Specialized Allez and want to fit some tyres for winter and maybe a mild bit of off road. Anyone got any recommendations? There is not much clearance between rim and brake cantilever.

Go to your LBS and get advice, probably a 25mm, maybe a 28mm at a push

Go for the Vittoria rubinos perhaps (come in 23/25/28). Chunky doesn't have much effect on grip on wet roads

I think if it was dry you'd be alright with some decent road tyres like a Schwalbe durano/plus on a gravelly bridleway for a short stretch but in the wet you'd be asking for trouble. If you can get some touring tyres like the aforementioned conti contacts or similar you might be alright but I'd feel happier on something more suited for off road this time of year TBH.

I would stick to 25s , you may get 28s in but if your wheel goes out of true or snap a spoke you will not be able to ride home .

I'm using Michelin Pro 4 Endurance in a 25 - rode a gravel / off road track by accident last night and they handled very well.
