Some pillock rammed the wifes car the other night, amazingly there WAS a cop in the vicinity and he nabbed the culprit who tried to escape.. [ amazingly as well a couple of the local chav ner-do-wells came over and told us who had done it:ohmy: ] ..

Anyway the guy told the cop he would sort it out with us [ paying for repairs ] and names and addresses were taken etc.

Of course the bloke never came round and we are going through the insurance company [ he is insured apparently ].

The problem is our car is ancient and the book price is only about £150, not enough to buy another car and they will no doubt write it off even though we were quoted only 300 quid to fix it properly. It has just passed its MOT is ultra reliable and has a tiny engine with good consumption.

My question to those on this forum who might know about these things is...
Do we have a right to refuse a stupid £150 compensation offer and demand that the car is repaired or a suitable replacement is offered or paid for? Or are we doomed to the spending money on another car meaning this has cost us money and therefore making a nonsense of the compensation system.
We need the car mostly for visiting the elderly ma in law who lives miles away...

You position here is not usually strong - see policy wording for details, but they all have the options at the insurer's call. Usually the best option is to buy it back from the insurers if you want to keep it - i.e. they write it off and give you the money. You buy it back for less and repair it.
