We got a 130mm Newtonian telescope a couple of weeks ago (less than 200 quid - seriously worth it), pointed it at Jupiter and immediatly saw all 4 moons and the bands, stunning.

Three years ago I was fortunate. enough to be on a dive boat anchored on The Great Barrier Reef about 40 miles off Cairns. The sky was clear and the master turned off all the lights. There was no Moon and The milky Way just shone like a huge silver smudge from horizon to horizon.

We see so little of the night sky with our smoggy, sodium lit skies, it's such a shame

Th emost amazing stars I ever saw were were from the island of St. John...the sky was full of them...so many there were more stars than dark sky around them it seemed. The second was from the top of a BIG hill in th eblack forest in the snow. Ther eis a telescope shop (of all things) on the high street, I'm tempted.

Yes, the night sky is 'out of this world'. About 30 years ago I went on a Nile cruise and enjoyed lying on the 'sun' deck at night to see the stars. The sight remains vivid in my memory, even if the sheer size of it all boggles the mind.

The best night sky I have seen was when I worked in France for a few Summers. I was in the countryside, so no urban lighting, and the sky view was just immense. Sat there for several hours just looking in awe at it.

I have always loved the stars, when I was a kid, my dad showed me the 'saucepan' as he called it. Ever since then its been the enormity of it that gets me.

Then best sky of stars I have ever seen was while sitting in my own hot water pool, on hot water beach, on the coramandal peninsula in new Zealand. It was 11 1/2 years ago, and the thought of it still amazes me. Absolutely wonderful.

But for that hairs on the neck moment, its the full moon on a clear night. Beautiful.

I think the best night sky I ever saw was whilst travelling from Aswan down to Abu Simbel in Egypt. It was though a blanket of stars had been thrown in to the sky, truly amazing.

Yes I slept out underneath Lesotho's (in South Africa) sky and I could not believe how beautiful it looked, I will never forget how many shooting stars I saw. Wonderful awe inspiring stuff.
