Had the same set of look keo cleats for about a year so far without any major wear.
When your doing any excessive amounts of walking use the cleat covers, that's what they are for.
They are small and light and fit in a jersey pocket, so easy to take with you

I rode the same Look Keo cleats for over 2 years, without cleat covers (I ride about 800 mile a month and walk about at cafe stops, and have walked over a mile on more than 1 occasion on them, inc ascending a stream when utterly lost and slightly confused after a crash) and only replaced them when an emergency brute force unclip savaged one of them about 2 weeks ago when I dropped the chain when out of the saddle giving it the max treatment.

I understand others get through them faster, somehow, but if you are getting through them at a rate that makes it a (financial) concern, you are doing something odd!
