Go Michelin. The roads you will cycle on are small ones. The yellow Michelins will have them. The Collins one I found online was 18 miles to the inch......

Michelin or AA road atlas is a cheap way of getting maps for all of France.
Either way, you want 1:200 000 or better.
An easy test is to open it at the first page of mapping, which will be around Calais, probably. If you can see canals, Guines, and a whole load of little roads, that's good. If you just see the Autoroutes, Paris and Epernay, find something smaller scale.
But do get an up-to-date map. It's always confusing when your small lane is truncated by an unexpected motorway and a brand-new TGV line.

rather than buy several maps from michelin, buy one of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/France-20...1189098064?pt=Non_Fiction&hash=item20df86aa50 - it is the 2012 version, and whilst I take The Doctor's point, you can save a few quid with an older version

I plan my route with RIdewith GPS. I then print off my route on A4 sheets back to back. I cover about 20miles ish each side of the proposed route for deviations. Much easier than taking a big map with a lot of info or roads or part of the country I'm not likely to visit.
You can also photocopy your route from a Michelin map and take that.

I usually buy the 2 years out of date Michelin Road Atlas from The Works paying around £5.

If you take a tablet with you, you can get a subscription to sitytrail france (25 euros for year) that gives you access to all IGN maps of france down to 1:25000 scale.You have all the map detail you want, and the tablet will tell you where you are. You download maps for where you are going. Can also get them online as you go if you have internet connection wifi or 3G.
I first used sitytrail with an acer tablet that had a poor GPS receiver. Now use a samsung galaxy tab 3, and it is excellent.
If you plan routes using ridewithgps, you can export routes to gpx files and import them to sitytrail.
That way you can see your intended route, actual route and location, and as much map detail as you want all on your screen t the same time. And keep a log of just where you've been. Sitytrail also does maps of belgium and holland. there's a simillar one for switzerland - free but I havent properly tested it.
ridewith gps does all sorts of paths, sitytrail maps show them too. Sometimes hard to work out what paths are really bikeable.
