Commuter bike for £5-700

Right, so fresh from buying myself a new Cube Peloton Race, my dad has decided that he too would like a new bike. But for what he wants he's looking in all the wrong places.

He looked at a 13kg cube hybrid with full front suspension, and then even a 29er hardball Cube Acid. The acid does look great, and I'd happily borrow it off him to get some trails, but I feel that it won't be great for commuting and so it will sit in the garage unused. Which is a waste.

So what would be a good commuter for around 600 quid, give or take a hundred? It had to be a flat bar, not drops.

I commute on a 29er and its a 30mile round trip, which can be upped to 44 by taking various other routes. Put some cyclocross tyres on it, lock the suspension and off you go. Mine even has a rack and bag
