What does everyone always keep in their bag on a commute? What are the absolute essentials?

Is there anything none-obvious. My thoughts are just a puncture repair kit, inner-tube and hydration system. Anything else?

I do not carry that much - pump, tube, 2 levers, puncture repair kit, multi-tool are in an undersaddle pack. The rest will depend on what I need for work that day and goes into a daysack. If I get myself organised, I will take a few day's stuff in and not carry a pack for a few days.

I forgot mine yesterday, pity it would have caught something I found funny. On West Coates Road because of the tram works the busl lane is suspended and the outside lane instead becomes bus only. I therefore want to shift into the outside lane, there's a double decker there and as I'm doing the same speed I wait and drop in behind. and get a draft. A couple of seconds later a car comes shooting down the lane. She's determined to overtake, even though there's only about 15yards to the bus only bit. I let her, then she realises it bus only and ploughs into the traffic cones sepparating the two lanes

Back to the OP. For coummuting I carry a pannier with a pump, aldi waterproof, montane overtrousers, a pump, spare tube, multi tool, tyre levers, p'ture repair kit, d'lock, wallet and keys and sometimes lights.

For leisure, I go light with a smaller pump and tube with some cereal bars and waterproof/ gilet in my jersey (maybe lights too) and a small repair kit and Topeak Hexus multi tool in my wedge bag.
