 a 13-14mph headwind feels like that, yet the trees don't move.

Yes, during the storm of Jan 2012. I climbed out of the local valley and a gust blew off the bike as I struggled over the tops.

That's brilliant!

Best I've had is when visiting the Dad down in Worthing one time. Loaded the road bike in my car and cycled to Brighton and back along the flat coast roads. Hell of a windy day. Going there, at one point the tail had me up to near 40mph without particularly trying to hammer it. Coming back, it had me down to 7mph!

Great fun.

yes. In northern Ireland I was blown off my bike and by some fluke landed in a gap in a dry stone wall! Later on in the day we hit headwinds that prevented us from cycling and had to get off and push (around a coastal section).
Also in northern norway we had 2 days where keeping our bikes on a wide 2 lane (and almost totally deserted) road was impossible at times. We spend several hours that 2nd day bracing ourselves against our bikes and pushing them.

As for a tailwind - going through Slovakia we had one wonderful day where we could hold 35mph on fully laden tourers without effort - stopping was a little more interesting!
