forget DH, slopestyle, bmx and all the rest...even extreme ironing.....Commuting is the extremest of the extreme sports.

I have lost count of the number of times I have nearly been killed, maimed or cut up on the daily squeeze on a daily basis....

I'll be drinking red bull and calling everyone "dudes" soon

It can get a bit hairy, especially in winter with snow & ice as well. I often wear body armour under hi-viz jacket!

It can be, but it keeps you fit, alert, and more able to deal with these situations, especially when things go wrong..... I'm sure a Mr Average Joe would have been very smashed up in my accident last December.

not kidding, in the last week i have had some good ones, including being hit on the helmet with a rolled up newspaper (passenger of wight van what a surprise), had three bottles of water thrown at me from cars, then the normal torrent of abuse. i have fitted a visor to my helmet after the cup of hot coffee incident last month. do the helmet cams make a difference? has anyone had police act on a film handed in?

Mark0vbr,

My only experience of Rotherham is the Parkgate retail park and JE James LBS just up the road. However, that was enough - you have my sympathies if you have to cycle there regularly (and my admiration).

blimey, either ortherham is very bad or you've done a hell of a lot of commuting miles.

I think it really improves alertness. I work in risk management and therefore i naturally become risk averse. Now i would say im risk assertive, risk taking on a quicker time scale.

And i think its great definitely helps me at work.

I spotted a lot of broken glass in the cycle lane in cambridge recently as well!

Commuting by bike may be a bit dangerous, granted, but so is commuting by tube/train/DLR/what have you. I can't tell you how many times I almost died of suffocation on my way home in a stuffy, overcrowded carriage. I'd rather face the road, HGVs and all, than other people's sweaty armpits
And what's wrong with Red Bull, anyway?

+1

(Not so sure about the Red Bull, though…)

Blimey, it sounds like some people have some really unfortunate commutes!

16 months in for me and not one incident, not one close overtake (less than 18 inches), not one word of abuse - 8 miles each way Waltham Abbey to Tottenham (which you would hardly expect to be cycling paradise!)
