Has anyone done it?

Any advice for me when I leave work tired?

Any advice to help me get to sleep/wind down when I get home?

I used to do it years ago, I always found I slept like a log after the ride home, it was much better than driving.

Used to do night shifts a few years back never had any problems sleeping when I got home.Dont do them now as we have a dedicated night link, which I have no inclination to join.

Summer weeknights I tend to get back between 22.30 and 23.30. It does seem to take me at least an hour and a half to wind down, shower, eat, and get to sleep.

I used to get home about 0800 after a night shift,i found a good hot shower and a then a cup of tea while watching telly till about 0900 to 0930 did the trick for me.

I used to do nights in a bakery and would cycle back after a shift at 06.00. I used to take it easy on the way home as I found it harder to sleep if I pushed myself too hard (either that or it was ODing on pastel coloured doughtnut icing that kept me awake).

Tea is no good?
Dont use booze either.I have a drinking chocolate and muesli before bed on my very early shifts as i *must* get at least four hours. Also for those shifts i use caffeine free teabags after 6pm.
Same basics really although different shifts.

As someone else has posted take it easy on your way home, or at least on the last few miles of your journey. The latest i've arrived home whilst commuting is around 01.00 & i always take the last 3 miles fairly steady. Quick shower / wash & watch TV or something for about half an hour then i'm straight off to sleep.

i have commuted after nights, surprisingly i managed the ride home much better than i expected, even if quite tired when i set off in the am. i find the ride home gives me inner peace and chance to really wind down. a quick shower and sometimes a little scotch  then i sleep like a baby

I've been doing this for a couple of weeks now, its great hardly any cars or buses around with clean fresh air. I always watch an hour of comedy with a glass of milk then bed and I don't get in until 00:00hrs.
I also feel very in control, because I'm wearing a safety hat, have a very good bright front light and two Smart Super flash lights on the rear (one flashing) with a reflective black night Vision waterproof jacket. This kit keeps me confident and I feel great (professional). I look forward to my ride home and so will you. Just remember to be as aware and on the ball as you are in the day time. Taylor

The only trouble I used to have where I live was dodging taxis full of beered up yobbos, milkfloats (who just don't give a damn about anyone else) and the occassional fox.

It still took a good hour to wind down though...

This is what I have found as well. I work a 11-7 once every three weeks, and to be honest it is not that much different than commuting during the day, but as petec says above it can be difficult to get in from work at 8am then go straight to bed. I tend to spend an hour or three reading or browsing the internet or maybe waqtch a movie before trying to sleep. And blackout curtains will help if you have difficulty sleeping during the day.

Thankfully I've never worked shifts but I have cycled home after a long day (12 hours +) in the office and I usually think twice before doing it and wonder about catching the tube. Then I remember it will be quicker (especially late at night) to cycle and get on my bike. I've never regretted it. Even very tired I find it uses a different part of my brain and I feel safe cycling home and sometimes do quite a fast time. other times I cycle quite slow but I always enjoy it and find it helps me unwind after a long day. So go for it and good luck ...
