Any South-East Sheffield cyclists offer any suggestions?

It looks like I'm going to be seconded for 3 months and my 4 mile tootle will be replaced by a 9-14 mile switchback

Cycle Streets comes up with the following

http://www.cyclestreets.net/journey/38313279/

but although the quiet route avoids Newfield Green up Gleadless Road (those who know will know), adding 5 miles of particularly dark, dingy and glass-strewn cycle paths doesn't appeal (much of the road on that route is legally no cycling, and that which isn't is a 50mph treated as a 70 with narrow lanes) - plus the off-road sections require a white and black MTB with a hi-vis jacket which, as I found out by riding exactly that, sends the lurking scroats down the avenues and alleyways scattering shouting "leggit, coppers!"

Any other suggestions for getting from the Nether Edge area over to Renishaw?

At least they have showers, which will be posh considering my current trigger spray bottle of soapy water in the disabled cubicle that I currently use if I've taken the scenic route.

I put that in google maps with the cycling option and it came up pretty much the same by the looks of it. I hope you can find a better alternative! I did try this:

It shows you using a bridle path close to Renifrew though it looks like you still end up on the B6388/Gleadless Rd. I'm not sure that excludes the road you don't want to go on after all that.

It depends what you want. If I was going the quickest route, I would chose pretty much what the Red Route on your Cycle streets link is, although outbound I would chose Leighton Road as the hill is longer but not as steep. Going the back roads will slow you down a lot, and I usually stick to the main roads. Watch out for the tram tracks on White lane (before the Fox lane turn off). There is an alternative parallel route in an adjacent street, which of course means that you have to stop at every junction. I usually just risk it with the trams and try and keep up with the traffic.
The rest of White lane until you get to Highlane is narrow and dark country lane. Have good lights at this time of year. It can be busy in rush hour, but if you're used to Traffic it's ok.
From here it really depends how you like to ride. If you're somebody who's not bothered by traffic, then just continue down the A6135 through Mosborough. This is a great little road, and if you like descending you can just freewheel at 30mph through the village. A slight up hill past Mosborough hall, then a screaming (but short) decent down to Eckington. Past that it's mostly flat until Renishaw. 50mph on that bit of road, but it can be narrow in places, and past the golf club is the narrowist part with high walls and a narrow bridge over the railway. There can be quite a few lorries along here, but they're usually good. In the morning it is quite a busy route out to the M1.
If you prefer Sustrans routes, you can turn left in Mosborough down the B6058. After the roundabout there is a nice quiet trail route over the river to the TPT, which goes all the way to Renishaw.

Ah, White Lane...now that gives me an idea....back in the days before internet and MP3s I used to copy borrow all my music from the record library at Crystal Peaks as they had a better selection than the central library...trying to remember what route I took back then some 17 years ago. I think up through meersbrook Park then a grind up Warminster, then to White Lane.

Looking at the OS map too...could be some potential for some off-road commuting. Damn, that means the 90's Raleigh M-Trax that is on my workstand awaiting a new B/B to finish off is going to be another N+1 rather than for sale.

I was in Eckington last weekend and didn't see any sign of temporary traffic lights....

Good News!
They were there all summer. I've been avoiding the place.

Ah drat..

My secondment isn't happening now - at least not this year. I'd got my bottom bracket ordered to finish off the retro MTB and was kind of starting to warm to the idea
