I am in need of some new tyres for my hybrid commuter bike.

Weight and P******e protection are the main considerations.

Commute is 25% road, the rest is cycle track; be it smooth tarmac, gravel and half mile-ish through a farm.

I have looked at the M+ tyres, which seem great for P* protection but do seem quite heavy. My bike is fully laden so trying to save as much weight as I can.

Any recommendations of which tyre to use? I have looked at the Conti Travel Contacts. Opionions.

Cheers,

Anil.

If I am honest, tyres and rim sizing confuses me. Take 700 x 35. 700 being the dia. of the rim? with 35mm being the width of the tyre? Would it improve my cycling efficiency if I went for narrower tyres, but still with the nobbly edges?

Yes.
Tyre size is the single easiest thing you can do to improve your efficieny/speed. 35mm to 23mm is about a 33% decrease in friction = approx 33% increase in speed/efficiency. very roughly.

You'll need to be quite concientious about keeping the pressure at 110psi+ to avoid pinch punctures on the rougher surfaces. But other than that will suffer no problems. Conti are generally my prefered brand.

It depends if you want to deal with punctures or not. There are stories on here of people doing 2k miles on a set of Marathon + tyres and only replacing them because they wore out, completely puncture free. I use them and I don't have to worry about riding through glass and other sharp stuff - if it's going to puncture a Marathon+, i'd have had a puncture if I rode over it on a bike or driven over it with a car regardless.

Excellent, thanks. Are rims a standard size? I.E. Would I be able to swap say 35mm tyres to lesser size with ease?

I have also just read some bad reviews about the M+ tyres on wet surfaces. They seem like the ideal solution to prevent punctures, but the weight and high loss of traction on wet surfaces is a problem.

Ah HGV tyres ! Can't help.

Comfort tyres :becool:

What is your budget?
I have just (as in today) received my Marathon Supreme tyres 35's which will be going on the CX bike for everyday use, nice mix of comfort, relatively low weight compared to the M+ that are on there now, and hopefuly p* protection.
