Came back from holiday to find my main PC completely dead. Tried swapping power leads with the printer - both leads work with the printer, neither brings the PC to life. It's an old PC and I suspect it's just reached the end of its natural, but if anyone has any suggestions I'd appreciate them. NB when I say dead, I mean dead. Not the slightest response to plugging/unplugging/switching onoroff....nada.

No fans spin up?

Most likely a dead Power supply.

Nope - like I say, nothing at all. Power supply? Is that the box the lead plugs into? Are they standard? 'cos I still have an even older pc in the loft I could cannibalise, if it's easy.

If it's a similiar vintage you should be OK. A few screws to undo, put in new one and one by one swap the leads. Check first that you have all the same leads and the requisite number before you commence the swap with the new one.

Schplendid. Sounds worth a try. I'll post back if it comes to anything.

dont plug the hard drive into the new powersupply

If the replacement powersupply is faulty then you risk destroying the harddrive and losing data

only plug the motherboard in (possible 2 connectors) and try powering it up - if it works, then turn off and plug everything else in
