Does anyone know of any good reason why the magnet and sensor for a (wired) VDO computer can't go on the back wheel?

I can't see one - the cable's long enough and the installation will be neater and easier.

The wire on a cateye astrale is supposed to go to the back wheel, and I think it makes a good deal more sense. No risk of taking the wheel out and fitting it backwards, and if you want to use the bike on a turbo trainer the computer will still operate

Thanks, another good reason (I don't want to use a turbo trainer!).

My thinking so far is that on the mtb it avoids the suspension front fork, it keeps the wire clear of the steering movement, it keeps the wire out of the way of brakes better, and it's generally neater.

Prefer wired - less interference problems and only one battery to go flat!
