How about something a little simpler? If the speaker power is one of the bulky plug things you may have issues physically getting it in one of the sockets, but I have a 4 socket extension that does the master/slave thing - just can't find a link to one at the moment.

You could buy some cheap USB powered speakers for about a tenner.

The one I was thinking off doesn't appear to do it in sleep mode, only when the main unit shuts down. Which is what the one I use does, only I flick the switch.
You could of course get a switched surge protection unit(Each socket has is its own switch). Mark the one for the PC, leaving that one on. Turning the rest on/off as required. Wilko, approx £20-£25.

Or you could sell them and buy something that actually meets your requirements. Or even give them away to friend or charity shop if they're not worth much. Plenty of options before chucking them in the bin.
