Computer problem

I bought a Samsung netbook (N110) last week and it was working well until I downloaded the ESET anti-virus programme. I uninstalled the McAfee anti-virus that came with the netbook.

Since then /Sunday afternoon) I cannot get into my netbook at all; I am completely locked out.

Does anyone have any idea as to what this problem is?

I'll be taking it to Curry's in Witney on Saturday pm, but thought one of you clever types could help!

Thanks

Can you get any life out of it at all? Any boot process?

Have you tried taking out the battery leaving it for a couple of minutes and starting it up using the mains power supply.

No, I can switch it on and the icons appear, but after clicking on an icon, the hourglass appears for 7-10 seconds, then disappears and then nothing happens - just the screen on!

I'll try your suggestion.

Although you think you've uninstalled McAfee, there may well be bits of it still around and these are known to cause problems. The McAfee web site has a download for the program that completely removes all traces of McAfee but that won't do you much good if you can't get the machine to start in the first place.

Have you tried booting the machine in Safe Mode? If you can the it might be worth removing ESET and the getting the McAfee removal download (after a reboot) and starting again.

Failing that, you could put the machine back to its shipped configuration or the backup that Samsung' s set-up asks you to take. (I don't have the manual to hand but it's described in there somewhere).

Failing all of that look at "sammynetbook.com" and see if you can get any help there.

Once you get it going again, make sure that you use the McAfee removal tool before installing any other AV program.

If you can get into safemode, go to help and search for system restore. When you install new software it should save a restore point, as long as you haven't disabled that option. It will give you a list of dates you can restore to. It has saved my life quite a few times with viruses and the like. There are different ways to get to safemode, pressing F8 on mine when starting up will give me the option. Good luck!
