My ex is getting DS1 a laptop. most the off the shelf ones come with vista now. I have set up a network at home which is fine at the moment because we all run off xp (I have two very old computers from work which the boys use occasionally). Will it be problematic with printers/broadband etc if one is vista the other xp?

Should be no problems in theory.

If you have long hair it might be best to get it cut very short now.

It can't get much shorter. You see I have heard of all sorts of vista problems and would like Office 07 on it. I'm pretty much ok sorting out computer things but can do without extra hassle unfortunately I'm not calling the shots on this one. Does vista have excel and word, sorry if that's a stupid question but we had a machine with works once and it was a total nightmare trying to open documents.

Wireless LAN and ethernet LAN will work OK in any combination.

If you connect your printer directly, then you may not have a driver for it if it's old. Via an existing, networked PC or a print server it should be fine.

no vista doesn't "have excel and word". office is a separate product, what MS make most of their money out of!
Consider using Google Docs, which basically offers office functionality in a browser, the advantage being that you can obviously access your documents from anywhere. Alternatively open office.
If you just want to write letters do them in notepad - just remember to turn off page header/footer when you print.

The operating systems (XP and Vista) will interact with no ill effect on any Computer network as long as they are running the same network protocol. Nowadays nearly always TCP/IP (although many other options exist)

Another great alternative to MS Office is Open Office (by SUN) http://download.openoffice.org/

I have just checked my house insurance which doesn't cover accidental cover for lap tops so am thinking that may be another cost. We have just had a lap top screen replaced at work which cost £90 and I am sure by 12 year old is not going to be the best at looking after it - I would add that he has saved half the money towards it himself so he can't be totally irresponsible can he?

They usually come with Works which is OK - basic word processor and spreadsheet - my kids like it, but anything serious is done on office !!

We have two laptops, one Vista and one XP, and an iMac on a network and they work fine. Setting up was not particularly problematic.

However you may wish to avoid Vista for other reasons!... ;0)
