Reporting damage

We want to know immediately if you think that any part of our network (outside the boundary of your property) has the potential to be a danger to the general public, if you notice that it has been damaged, or to report unsafe or messy Openreach worksites. We'd like you to call us on 0800 0232023 if you spot any of the following so we can attend to it quickly:

 • Damaged underground cables (typically caused by mechanical diggers in built-up areas)
 • Loose cables or cables dangling from telephone poles
 • Damaged green cabinets and/or open doors on them
 • Damaged telephone poles (e.g. poles leaning at awkward angles, or poles that have been completely smashed to the ground)
 • Loose, cracked or missing manhole covers

Last year I wasted a great deal of time trying to get BT interested in some of their plant that was hazardous to road traffic, but had to give up in the end.
However I see they now have a number in the latest Phone Book for just such reports.
Reporting damage to telephone poles etc.

Seems you have phone line for reporting just about anything in the UK. Here in Ghana we don't even have a emergency 999 number.
really?
is there no health service or fire service?
there is a certain level of police isn't there?

Funnily enough there is quite a good Fire service with modern equipment. There is a health service but not up to the UK standard. Police are everywhere and most carry AK 47's but are very corrupt, if they stop you in the car all they want is money. Our friend was burgled yesterday so we had to collect the police and take them. All they could say was "Thank God you are still alive"!

The military are not much in evidence. You may know Ghana was ruled by Flight Lt Gerry Rawlings (who is half Scottish) for some time following a coup but has since returned to democratic rule.

A few years ago, got home and... no phone line or Broadband

Telephoned on Mobile and reported.... they tested the line and there was no fault

So we arranged a visit with dire warnings that if there was no fault with their system that we would be billed with the visit

Then local news reported that:
Copper cable theft cuts off phone lines

Thousands of people have had their phones cut off after copper thieves stole a huge length of cabling.

The thieves broke into a BT junction box in Fareham Road, Gosport, on Wednesday and made off with 10,000 worth of copper cables.

Police say 660 metres of cable was taken, affecting about 2,400 telephone lines.

Many residents will be without phone and internet access all weekend and have complained that they have been left without information by BT.

The theft has hit phone services in many roads including Brookers Lane, Tewkesbury Avenue and Fareham Road.

Chris Clark, 65, of Brookers Lane, Gosport, has been without a landline and internet since Wednesday.

He said: 'We haven't heard anything from BT or the police. It's not on. A telephone is a life line for some people, especially the elderly.

'It is rather bad on BT's part. It is annoying, we can't get on broadband and are having to rely on our mobile phones.

'It will be interesting to see if they offer any compensation.'

BT spokeswoman Emma Littlejohn confirmed the lost phone services has been caused by the theft.

She said: 'This has caused widespread disruption to services and around 500 homes and businesses are still without service. Engineers and contractors have been at the scene working all hours of the day in some terrible weather to clear blockages and lay more than 200 metres of new cable.

'We will continue to work tonight and over the weekend and aim to restore all the service by Monday, but this will depend on no unforeseen circumstances.

'We would like to assure customers that we are working as quickly as we can to restore their service and minimise disruption.'

Police have said the thieves struck between 1pm and 2pm on Wednesday, but so far no arrests have been made.

Mr Clark added: 'It wouldn't have been so bad if we had been informed about what was going on but nobody seems to know what is going on.

'We haven't been able to get any information from anybody.'

Anyone with information about the theft should contact Fareham police station on 0845 045 45 45, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

SO we rang BT to tell them that this had happened, to be told that they would test the line again!

Which was fine, so we reiterated that the line had been stolen and were told that that was not possible.

Three hours later got a call on the mobile out our engineer visit and told that the line was affected by a copper theft... the reason the line showed no fault is that if there is no line it cannot show a fault!!!!

.... several days later.....
We got everything back, but kept getting calls from strangers, and my friends were getting put through to other people

So phoned the mobile and got a number displayed that wasn't ours as we had been recollected wrongly. Reported to BT and were told thatthey would correct, butthat we would be responsible for any phones on my original number made during the period.

Eventually got sorted, but it was a farce from start to finish
