It's actually probably not encrypted. It will use mpeg2 transport stream (check Sky transmission spec) for SD, I'm not sure for HD. VLC will play it, as long as you can get the device to be mounted and read from. Generally this is achievable with a LiveCD of Linux. If you get a file and can't find a convertor PM me and I'll have a look at the data type of it.

Yes, I have something like that. I've used it for recording from a live camera and for transferring VHS to DVD. Assuming your Sky box has composite video and audio outputs it should be fine - but you will have to copy it in real time.
