Hello, this is my first post .
I have done some short tours on this hybrid bike in the last few years, which have been generally flat, so this year my mates have decided that Lands End to John O'Groats needs accomplishing. After last years tour my bike (the specilized globe (http://www.evanscycles.com/products/specialized/globe-sport-2007-hybrid-bike-ec014477?style=70286) is very poorly, and i cant afford a whole new bike (being a student). I have already purchased a shimano xt rear derailleur, but was wanting advice on brakes, handlebars and shifters??

My advice would be to service/overhaul/replace what needs servicing/overhauling/replacing but otherwise leave it as is. It definitely would not be worth trying to convert to 9-speed or put drops on or whatever.

It could well be worth replacing the bottom bracket, get the wheels checked over and tightened up, get the headset bearings serviced/replaced, new cables and possible cable outers, new tyres. It may also need new chainrings, cassette and chain.

Bar ends would give you a greater variety of hand positions.

I agree. This is not a truly bad bike, but the parts quality is quite minimal. This means that parts wear out rather quickly when you start using the bike in earnest. Getting repairs done professionally is prohibitive in relation to the cost of the bike, and so is upgrading. However, with a bit of luck the bike will survive. The best investment, apart from the suggestions above, is probably the Park Tools bicycle maintenance handbook.
As for ride quality/speed, get some really good tyres, such as 50 mm Schwalbe Big Apples, if they will fit. They are fast, resilient, and very comfortable. The latter also helps to protect wheels, crappy seatpost, etc.
Anyhow, enjoy the ride. We have all started out on border line bikes. One day you may ride a really nice bike.

I've got the self same bike & have used it for commuting & a couple of coast to coast tours.
Only mods on mine are marathon+ tyres, brooks saddle, mudguards, rack & bar ends.
Best mod probably bar ends, which just give you more options for hand position when on the bike all day  I've just ordered some butterfly bars to fit to the globe which I'm hoping will be better again

I've just got a std black B17 saddle on. It was recommended on the old c+ forum & it's the comfiest saddle I have on any bike. I've just ordered a honey B17 for the tricross £35 from SJS cycles
