I've got two Kindles and a laptop in front of me, is there any way to copy books from one Kindle to the other?
I've tried saving the file from one to documents on the laptop and then back to the other Kindle but it doesn't seem to work.

No, because Amazon are ruthless and sneaky so they keep your money even publishing their own versions of classics which are otherwise free because they're supposedly out of copyright... that's why I don't use the one that I got as a Christmas present that I didn't want to start with.

There are 2 kindles and 1 kindle fire in our house, they only really get used for holidays. But, although I've only downloaded books to one kindle, all 3 kindles have them installed in their library, how? I don't know, magic?

Kindle books are assigned to accounts rather than devices. So thanks to the Kindle android app I can read my books on my Kindle, my phone and my Nexus 7 (should I choose to). I'm a bit anti-convergence though so the Kindle is used for reading books.

If they all use the same account you can deliver the books to any device.

Archie is correct though Amazon are to books what Apple is to music.

That said I'd be willing to fight rabid dogs to protect my Kindle.

As @Lanzecki says if both kindles are on the same account go to manage my kindle and deliver the books to which ever kindle you want. I have an old Kindle that i use as my library and you can have categories etc but on the fire i can't do this so i read and listen to my music on my fire and when the book is finished i deliver it to my other kindle into whatever category i want.

I also only take my old kindle away with me on holiday as its smaller and lighter to hold. The fire is for home and commuting.

Also like Lanzecki i would walk over fire to save my kindles. I gave up books for them and without them i would

As has been said, use the one account. In our house, one kindle, but iPad, Samsung tab and a numberof android phones can get the same books.
